Page 3- PREFACE AND NOTES

South Africa has a national treasure of pictographs (rock paintings) and petroglyphs (rock etchings). The paintings are very well preserved and old. These paintings are easily 4000 years old, possibly older. Painting sites are easily reached from Cape Town. Plan on a leisurely 2 or 3 days to reach the paintings- a week for full enjoyment of the South African West Coast.

Continue travel North for 2 days and you will reach the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. At Ais-Ais, Fish River Canyon, Namibia, is the “Apollo XI” archaeology site where pre-historic pre San  paintings have been found and dated to 27,000 years ago.
